Climate Change – Valentina Figueroa

2019 was a breakthrough year for environmental activists all around the world, especially the young generations.

Although young activists have been actively participating and reminding their communities of the commitment we have with the earth for decades in many countries in all continents, Greta Thunberg has been definitely the poster girl for this movement in the last years with #FridaysForFuture. In December of 2019, the annual UN Climate Change Conference (COP25) was going to be held in Santiago, Chile. In the midst of a social uprising, the government announced the cancellation of the event for security reasons, eventually, it was relocated and took place in Madrid that same year.

The cancellation of COP25 brought a bittersweet taste to the Chilean citizens as it would allow prioritizing the social crisis the country is still going through but removing the platform local environmentalists were counting on to shine a light to the international community on the ongoing outrageous abuse of natural resources in a country where water is fully privatized.
